Sergeant Eric Stein, 39, was gunned down when he and two others went to confront a subject at his home. Just before noon, Sheriff Jeff Shipley, Sgt. Eric Stein and Deputy Chief Casey Hinnah arrived at the home of a subject wanted for questioning involving possible death threats made to a local business owner. As they walked up on the home, they were met by immediate gunfire. Sgt. Stein was fatally shot from a shotgun wound to the head. The Sheriff and Deputy Hinnah retreated, called for back-up and a stand-off ensued. Numerous agencies came running and for nearly three hours tried to get this killer to give it up. He finally walked out of the home with weapons in his hands and made the threatening motion. Shots were fired, taking down the killer in order to save the lives of anyone else from harm. This is an ongoing investigation and will update as needed.

Sgt. Stein began his career of life-saving years before he took the oath to the badge. Eric began as a paramedic and firefighter where he was known to be kind to all whom he came across. He was born to be a first responder with a heart so big and a willingness to sacrifice his personal life for others. A very personable young man who treated everyone fairly and did not judge others before getting the chance to know them. Though quiet, he had a warm aura about him that made him approachable which made his work a little easier when dealing with victims. His calling may have stemmed from an incident that happened long ago. His sister had been left physically disabled when she was an infant and Eric has been a big care-giver to her ever since. Truly Living As Only A Hero Could. After several years working with the fire department, he found he could not resist his calling any longer and in July of 2000, he began his work Saving, Serving and Protecting the citizens of Keokuk County as a Deputy ... and never looked back. When not in uniform, you could usually find Eric playing with his daughter or at a sporting event.
